Qualifications For Prospective Board Of Education Member

Information for Prospective Board of Education Member

Board of Education member qualifications are as follows:

  • Must be able to read and write.
  • Must be a qualified voter of the district; that is, a citizen of the United States, at least 18 years of age or older, and not adjudged to be incompetent.
  • Must be and have been a resident of the district for a continuous and uninterrupted period of at least one year immediately preceding the election.
  • May not have been removed from any school district office within the preceding year.
  • May not reside with another member of the same school board as a member of the same family.
  • May not be a current employee of the school district.
  • May not simultaneously hold another incompatible public office.
  • The Board of Education is comprised of nine volunteer members from the community who are elected by District voters for three-year terms.  Public meetings are held twice monthly.  A meeting schedule is approved by the Board at their organizational meeting in July.

Members of the Wappingers Central School District Board of Education are elected by voters to establish policy and set the direction for the administration of the school district.  New York State Education Law does not limit the number of terms of office a member may serve.  Board members receive no salaries or other compensation.  A term of office for a Board member is three years beginning July 1 and ending June 30. The candidates that receive the highest votes earn the open seats available during each election cycle.

  • A qualified candidate must obtain and submit a nomination petition to run for Board office. Board nomination petitions become available in February of that year’s election.  Each nominating petition must contain the candidate’s name as well as the name and address of each signatory.  Nominating petitions must be returned to the District Office 30 days prior to the school district’s Annual District Election and Budget Vote.  The number of signatures required on the petition varies each year (it is the greater of 25 people or 2 percent of voters in the previous election).

Voting on candidates for Board membership takes place at the Annual District Election and Budget Vote in May.

  • New York State Education Law requires that Board candidates file three campaign expenditure statements.  If the campaign expenditures are over $500 the statement must be filed with the District Clerk and the NYS Commissioner of Education.  If the expenses are under $500 the campaign expenditure statement need only be filed with the District Clerk.  A preliminary campaign expenditure statement must be filed at least thirty days before the election, a second statement must be filed on or before the fifth day preceding the election and a final statement must be filed within twenty days after the election.

*Campaign expenditure statements must be filed with the Office of the District Clerk and the NYS Commissioner of Education if the expenditures are over $500. If the expenses are under $500, the campaign expenditure statement need only be filed with the District Clerk.
