Wappingers Central School District Celebrates
Youth Art Month & Music in Our Schools Month
The Wappingers Central School District (WCSD) proudly celebrates Youth Art Month (YAM) and Music in Our Schools Month (MIOS) throughout March 2026. Students and staff across the district are highlighting the importance of arts education through concerts, exhibitions, school-wide celebrations, and community activities that showcase creativity and talent.
WCSD’s Music Department is celebrating the power of music education with a variety of performances and events that highlight student learning and achievement. Students will perform in Music in Our Schools concerts, featuring band, orchestra, and chorus ensembles that demonstrate the growth and dedication of young musicians. On March 10th, the department will host its annual Instrumental Demo Day for incoming fifth-grade students, offering live demonstrations, exploration of instrument families, and opportunities to speak with music teachers and student musicians.
This month, 36 WCSD elementary students will participate in the Elementary All-County Festival, performing alongside peers from across the county under the direction of guest conductors. Additionally, we continue the tradition of participating in the New York State Band Directors Association (NYSBDA) Festival. WCSD students also take part in community traditions, including pep bands performing in the Wappingers St. Patrick’s Day Parade, proudly sharing their music with the community.
In addition to concerts, WCSD schools present spring musical theatre productions, giving students the chance to develop skills in singing, acting, dancing, and stage production while collaborating on full-scale performances.
At the same time, WCSD schools are celebrating Youth Art Month, a national observance emphasizing visual arts education and student creativity. Student artwork is displayed in hallways, libraries, and public spaces, transforming schools into vibrant galleries. Activities across the district include daily art trivia with prizes, fourth-grade weaving projects with families, Color Dress-Up Weeks, Youth Art Month drawing calendars, and student-designed banners and showcase displays.
Large-scale celebrations include student murals, Art Buddies collaborations with Grinnell Elementary, local and state YAM proclamations, “Make Art Mondays,” a legislative art exhibit, an art competition and bake sale, an origami art-making day, an Art Madness photo contest, Golden YAM Awards, and an Art Spirit Dress-Down Week. Students also engage in music-themed events such as trivia, staff surveys highlighting musical backgrounds, and “Favorite Artist” poster projects. Community engagement is further encouraged through Art Nights, hallway gallery displays, spirit weeks, and the adjudication of the Arts of Peace Competition sponsored by the Wappingers Rotary, allowing students to explore creativity while sharing perspectives on peace and community.
Together, these activities create a vibrant district-wide celebration of the arts, highlighting the creativity, dedication, and imagination of WCSD students while emphasizing the essential role of music and visual arts in education. The district is proud to honor the students and teachers who make these programs meaningful and successful every day!
