    Name:  Mr. Tad Herman

    Welcome Back to Sept 2018!

OVER THE PAST FEW YEARS, I have been using Google Classroom for most of my web related information and communication. So, there will be few updated to this webpage.

You will be getting access to the Google Class on the first day of class.

However, you can take a look here for starters.

Syllabuses are accessible in the left column.

PLTW StudentsFAQ -"Did I earn the RIT credit?"

Due to the exams being later in the testing week this year, and my immediate plans after the end of the school year, I may not have been able to contact you or your parents directly to inform you that you are eligible for the RIT credit...Don't worry there is still plenty of time.

The RIT PLTW link is http://www.rit.edu/pltw

The simple rules for Eligibility are:

    1) Passing the PLTW John Jay course with an final year end average of 85 or above (since the computer generates the final average for the report card, an 84 will also be acceptable from me...)

    2) A 6, 7, 8, or 9 on the Final PLTW Exam 6=C, 7=B, 8 or 9 =A.  I can only speak for myself, but I put the PLTW score of 1-9 on the report card as the student's final exam score.

So, look at your report card.  If the final average is 84 or above, and the final exam score is 6, 7, 8, or 9, then you are eligible for the credit.

I ALWAYS recommend getting the college credit.  It is $225 for 3 credits.  Community colleges are even much more expensive.  Most students who I have talked to have been able to use the RIT credit they received, much like DCC english or AP's from JJ. DO IT!  Many colleges and universities will allow them as transfer elective credits, at a minimum.

This is a link to the form to fill out and submit to RIT.

     PLTW POE CEA RESULTS!
Great job!  One grade of 9 in each class and TEN grades of 8! Also 60% getting 6 or above, which beats the last two years of 56% and 50%.
     POE CEA Results 2016
    PHYSICS Regents Final Exams- 2016

The results are in!  Most teachers felt their students results were a little lower than expected.  I would agree, but I still found the test very fair.  I predicted an average grade for my students of 77.6 and that actual was 74.9.  That's 2.7 points lower.  It turns out that my juniors average score was only 0.08 points below my predicted, and my seniors were almost 4 points below my predicted average.
Congratulations to students that earn the Herman bonus for doing well above expected: Juniors-Britney Guzman, Stephen LeGare, and Gage Link. And Seniors - Dan Gisolfi, Andrew LoPrete, and Nico Zachman.

FINAL EXAM NOTES FOR JUNE 2015

CEA and POE Results 2015- I may make a "prettier" chart like the ones found below, but for now, a simple graphic to convey how everyone did as a whole.  I was very pleased overall with the results.  The % of students with 6 and above went from about 50% last year to about 58% this year.  And remember, nationally, only about 38% of the students get a 6 or above.

Letters of results went out to everyone, so you should have gotten it already.  If not, then send me an email.

    PHYSICS RESULTS
Okay, the results are in! At first look, they are a strange set of numbers, but overall, not too bad.  The strangest thing is the lack of high scores.  I predicted 8 scores above 85 and there was only one.  I predicted a median score of 79 and it was 78 (close). 16 of 37 tests were in the 4 points of prediction...a touch less than half.  I predicted a mean of 76.9 and it was 74.5...this is the strange part. It is as if someone took the bell shaped curve of grades and squished it from the high side.

However, a very enjoyable year all around.  Two classes, two very different "personalities", one very rewarding year for me.  ENJOY.

I will be monitoring the school tools grade book to see if the results are in.  For those who did well enough above Herman expectations, I should be able to add the offered point bonus to your 4th quarter grade from here.  Just keep an eye on it when your report card comes in.

HOW I SPENT MY SUMMER VACATION (2015)
I had the opportunity to go to a NASA sponsored education workshop from Jun 22 -26 at the Wallops Island Launch Center in Virgnia.  I kept my first blog of the activities going on, including the rocket launch on the Thursday.

I also kept a blog of my 3-week summer bike adventure, if you are so inclined to see what teachers (at least this teacher) does outside of class, check out my blog.

POE and CEA Students regarding getting RIT Credit

Rules for being eligible for RIT credit

    1) You must earn an 85 or above average for your four quarter grades

    2) You had to get a 6 or above on Online Test.  6 = C grade, 7= B, 8 or 9 = A.

Finding out if you are eligible:

I will call all eligible students by Friday June 20th.  If I didn't call, then you didn't meet both criteria.  You are free to email me to find out what you did get.

What to do if you are eligible

I strongly urge any student who is eligible to get the RIT credit, to TAKE ADVANTAGE OF IT! Getting 3 college credits for $200 is cheaper than even the community college. Even with just a C, most students I have talked to over the years have been able to use the RIT credit to fill some requirement (usually free electives) towards their bachelors.

YOU WILL NEED THE REGISTRATION FORM. Go tohttp://www.rit.edu/emcs/pltw/ and snoop around and find the Student/Parent page and the registration form.

You can wait until fall and get a copy from me directly.

    There is time to decide.
The registration deadline is Nov, 2014

    Congratulations!

Test grades are all in!  Results are below.

One last lesson to anyone reading....
10 nanoseconds = 1 x 10^-8 seconds, but the ORDER OF MAGNITUDE of the 10 nanoseconds is -8.  So, since the question asked "What is the ORDER OF MAGNITUDE?"  The only acceptable answers were -8 or 10^-8.  If you said 1 x 10^-8, you did not get the credit.

What is the highest possible grade on a regents exam?....100
What is the order of magnitude of the highest possible grade on a regents exam?....2

100 would not be a correct answer to the second question.

    PLTW Overall Results 2013 and 2014(updated 6/18/14)

The chart below shows the resulting Stanine scores for both CEA and POE.  The green is the expected national distribution of scores and the X's are the scores of the JJ PLTW CEA POE students.  Good Job in being well above the national average!  19 of 35 (54%) earned 6 or more, thus reaching RIT Credit Level.  PLTW expects only 40% to reach this level.  (Remember, RIT Credit is available to students who averaged 85 and above for all 4 quarters AND got a 6 or above on Online Test.)

The first chart shows all the grades, so that you can see where you stand in the class.
The next tables are comparing predicted scores vs actual scores.  Everybody with green is getting that number added to their 4th quarter grades.  Thank you, and enjoy.  Congrats to Steve Bristol, Robert Conca, and Nick Lema for gaining the most points over their predicted scores.

Overall, the results are a little lower than I would like, but not too bad.  The average was 2.8 points lower than I predicted.
Remember, all the people that did better than I predicted (green column)earned extra points on their 4th quarter grade.

    PHYSICS REGENTS EXAM Results 2014
The physics regents results this year, as a group, were good.  The average score on the test was 76.7  which was higher than the 75.3 that I have predicted. 12 of 23 students were within 4 points of my prediction score, so that is right in line with past results. I was very impressed with my seniors sticking it out to the end.  Thank you.
