Please see the attached letter I sent to members of the United States Congress and Senate, urging them to make Federal funding available immediately to assign an armed, uniformed School Resource Officer, who works at a State/County or local police department, to be assigned to each of our school buildings. The presence of these officers in our schools will assist in keeping our students and staff safe, allow for continued collaboration, and foster a culture and climate of safety that will allow schools to focus on teaching and learning.
WCSD School Safety Update
On Tuesday, May 24th, 2022, our nation was reminded once again that we can never be complacent in our quest to provide a safe learning environment for our students and staff. On Wednesday, May 25th, all of our building principals met with liaisons from our local law enforcement partners and our security consultant to discuss the incident in Uvalde, Texas, and to review any immediate concerns our principals had with our current safety protocols and systems. This was a very productive meeting, which included suggestions for tangible items that will improve safety and security in our schools.
In addition, I personally visited each elementary school campus last week to conduct safety walk-throughs and to speak with administration, staff, and students regarding our ongoing commitment to the safety of all of our buildings' occupants.
We continue to gather information regarding the specific events that occurred in Uvalde. If you have been following the news related to this horrific event, you will know that the facts and timelines are continuously being updated. We will complete a final review of the incident once a comprehensive and accurate report has been compiled. That report will assist us in having meaningful conversations with our safety teams regarding any necessary adjustments to our District and Building Safety Plans.
In the meantime, I have asked our Legislative Action Committee, led by Trustee Sloshower, to develop a letter to be approved by our Board of Education and then sent to our State and Federal representatives requesting funding to assign a School Resource Officer to EVERY school in our District.
As always, thank you for your support of our students, staff, and of our District!
