Ms. DiStefano's Message

  • Tips and Resources

Posted by Laura Distefano on 4/8/2020

    Dear OV Family,

As we continue with our first full week of online learning, I wanted to provide students and families with a couple of tips for our new learning environments.

    • If you are a student and having difficulty using Google Classroom, please attend your teachers’ office hours.  Your teachers are there to help you navigate the best way to use Google Classroom.
    • If you are a parent/guardian and having difficulty using Google Classroom, please use the link below that our District has provided to assist in troubleshooting.  Also, do not hesitate to reach out to your child’s teachers and/or Mrs. Califano for assistance. https://sites.google.com/wcsdny.org/parent-resource-website/home
    • Although Google Classroom can be utilized on Smartphones, it is much easier to complete and submit assignments using a laptop/computer/tablet.  In addition, there are a number of Google Extensions that can be downloaded in order to assist in completing assignments. In the coming days, I will be posting a list of these extensions on the OV website.
    • At this time, to the best of my knowledge, all OV students have access to electronic devices.  Therefore, there will be no printed materials and/or packets of curriculum exchanged at this time.  If you still need to borrow a device from the District, please fill out the form in this link: https://docs.google.com/forms/d/e/1FAIpQLSePGKkTyrydcK-RPAMM9s9d6PQMO-WbWYY0KvX5_I1cU22bFA/viewform

Remember that the OV faculty is here to assist you and your family in any way possible.  Please do not hesitate to contact us with any questions and/or concerns.

    Sincerely,

    Ms. D.

  • OV Stands By You!

Posted by Laura Distefano on 4/3/2020

    Dear OV Family,

The Orchard View Faculty has been hard at work creating meaningful virtual learning environ`ments, and making plans to meet students’ academic, social, and emotional needs during this unprecedented time.  We recognize that our temporary reality is not ideal, especially for the OV community whose foundation is based on relationships. Please be assured that the OV faculty is here for you, and will do everything in our power to continue to support our students and their families.

Over the past week, the OV faculty and I have met several times over Google Hangouts to prepare to go “live” with our new learning environments.  Your teachers have been participating in their own virtual learning experience as they participated in professional development on the capabilities of Google Classroom.  Mrs. Califano and Mr. Palanca have been hard at work developing ways to meet your social/emotional needs from afar, while also compiling community resources to assist students and their families.

During my five years as the Principal of Orchard View, I cannot count the amount of instances I have seen our students rise and adapt to difficult situations.  There is no doubt in my mind, that our OV students will continue to be examples of resiliency, adaptability, and perseverance. Please remember your OV Family is still here and we stand ready to walk this difficult journey beside you.

If you have not done so already, please visit the District’s Emergency Response website at https://www.wappingersschools.org/Page/31106.  This website has a variety of resources, from both the District and the community.

    Thank you and be safe.

    Sincerely,

    Laura DiStefano

Principal, Orchard View Alternative High School

    Dear OV Community,

Please know that your child's health, safety, and security is our highest priority at OV, and throughout the entire WCSD.  On the district website, you will find links to an assortment of resources regarding COVID-19.  If you should need anything during these tumultuous times, please feel free to email me.  Mrs. Califano and Mr. Palanca will be checking their emails regularly in case any students should need assistance.   As we venture on this unprecedented path in society, OV is here to support you and your family in any way we can.

Attendance

  • Orchard View Alternative High School

    Attendance Action Plan

The vision of Orchard View Alternative High School is to create a supportive, academic environment where students value hard work, and individual goals are achieved.  Orchard View students learn to make positive choices that enable them to take an active role in their education and future career.

Of course one of the positive choices we expect them to make is their choice to come to school each and every day.  Student attendance is taken extremely seriously at Orchard View Alternative High School.  We recognize the direct correlation between daily attendance and its significant impact on student learning.  We support a diverse group of learners who all have a unique story to tell.   Every student has chosen to come to OV for the same reason: to have a chance to become a successful high school graduate.

Here are some of the attendance intervention strategies that we typically implement in our school:

Tip Line

  • Wappingers CSD is now using Anonymous Alerts®

The Anonymous Alerts® reporting app was created to help students, parents or community members choose a school official to contact, type of incident to report, school building and/or a specific location, set a priority level of normal or high and upload a photo, screenshot or video related to the incident.  This reporting system is meant to allow for anonymous reporting but still provides for District and Building Administrators to respond (via the app) to the person who submitted a tip to the District.

If you plan on submitting an alert anonymously please be sure to check the "message center" in the application itself to see any responses to your tip, or requests from District Officials for additional information.

The purpose of the app is for members of our school and community to report suspicious activity, bullying or student-related concerns to a school administrator. For all other reports, please contact your child's school directly. If you feel the need to keep this submission anonymous that is OK, we completely respect your right to privacy and appreciate you making us aware.
