Ms. DiStefano's Message

  • Welcome Back!

Posted by Laura Distefano on 9/5/2019 11:00:00 AM

    Dear Students and Parents/Guardians,

On behalf of the Orchard View Alternative High School faculty and staff, allow me to welcome you back with enthusiasm!  I hope you join in my excitement for another amazing year at Orchard View!  This year promises to be filled with many academic journeys made successful through hard work, open minds, and respect for all in our community.

Please remember that being present in school every day is an integral component of being a successful Orchard View student.  Student attendance directly correlates to academic achievement.  In order to make the most of all opportunities that Orchard View Alternative High School has to offer, students must be present and punctual every day.  Absences, even those that are excused, can lead to academic trouble and failing grades.  As we embark on the new school year, it is imperative that students understand how important punctual, daily attendance in all classes is to their overall academic success.

Please review the OV Electronic Device Expectation below.  While technology can enhance learning experiences in the classroom, unauthorized electronic device use can cause enormous distractions to the learning process.  In order to provide the most optimized learning environment for all students, the OV faculty/staff will be implementing the following procedure:

If a student is using her/his electronic device(s) during a class, without first being given permission by the teacher, the student will be directed to put her/his electronic device(s) on the teacher’s desk for the remainder of the period.  If the student does not comply with this directive, the student will be sent to the office and will lose electronic device(s) privilege for the remainder of the day, as well as the following day.  This means that the electronic device(s) will be locked in the Principal’s Office for the entire school day and returned when the last bell rings.  If the student refuse to hand her/his electronic device(s) in when asked, the student’s parent/guardian will be contacted, and the student will not be permitted to return to classes until she/he choose to comply.

As part of the preparation for September, I am asking that parents/guardians fill out all forms and send them in with their student on the first day of school.  This will ensure that Orchard View has the most up-to-date information at the beginning of the new school year.  Students may give these forms to their first period teacher, or bring them to the Orchard View main office.

I look forward to working with both students and parents/guardians throughout the 2019-2020 school year!

    Sincerely,

    Laura DiStefano

    Principal

    Attendance Action Plan

The vision of Orchard View Alternative High School is to create a supportive, academic environment where students value hard work, and individual goals are achieved.  Orchard View students learn to make positive choices that enable them to take an active role in their education and future career.

Of course one of the positive choices we expect them to make is their choice to come to school each and every day.  Student attendance is taken extremely seriously at Orchard View Alternative High School.  We recognize the direct correlation between daily attendance and its significant impact on student learning.  We support a diverse group of learners who all have a unique story to tell.   Every student has chosen to come to OV for the same reason: to have a chance to become a successful high school graduate.

Here are some of the attendance intervention strategies that we typically implement in our school:
