Thomas D. Macrini - Wappingers Sports Hall of Fame
It is fitting that a Sports Hall of Fame created during the 50th Anniversary year of the Wappingers Central School District include the name of Thomas D. Macrini. For twenty-seven years until his retirement in 1973, “Mac” contributed tremendously to the development of the physical education and interscholastic athletic program of the Wappingers Central School District.
As the schools multiplied during the period, so did the programs, and Tom Macrini was there as a teacher, coach and Department Head of Physical Education and Athletics. “Mac” coached several sports during his early years, and both his football and track teams were well known and respected throughout the area. Many new programs were instituted under his leadership as the interscholastic program grew, especially during his later years when girls’ athletic programs began a new birth of recognition. Further, he was active in initiating and supporting a program emphasizing “lifetime” sports activities, such as jogging, tennis, golf, and volleyball.
“Mac” was not only well known and respected in the area, but in the state as well. He served as President of the Football Officials Association, and in other active leadership roles in the New York State Association for Health, Physical Education, and Recreation, who honored him upon his retirement in 1973. He is further remembered by several of his athletes for his many college contacts and for the invaluable assistance he provided in helping them to further their education.
