    Due 10.4.17

    Vocabulary:

Organized Pattern-  Precise, regular repetition of designs

Random Pattern- A pattern without an orderly organization

Line Variety- The use of line in combination with tools and other elements of design to produce a particular effect

Texture- An artwork's surface quality such as smooth, rough, and soft

Simulated/Implied Texture- The perceived surface quality in an artwork

    Process:

Using a ruler as a stencil (no measuring required), trace the ruler vertically and horizontally across a page in your sketchbook to create a grid with spaces that are even to the thickness of the ruler.  In every space, draw a texture/pattern that you found in a magazine, or in your environment.

    You must complete the following:

    • A clear effort to mimic the line quality from the chosen observations
    • The textures and patterns fill each grid square
    • There is only one example of a particular texture so that the page is filled with variety
    • No letters are used, and the are no singletons (line without a pattern)
    • The work is done neatly and handed in on time (see above due date)

Establish the illusion of 3-D using line patterns

    You must complete the following:

    • A variety of line qualities
    • A clear light source
    • The correct # of objects
    • Done in black pen (all pencil erased)

    Process:
Study at least 5 people on one page in your sketchbook. It should focus on the back of their heads so you are considering line qualities. Use line direction and variety to establish value.

    You must complete the following:
    Draw at least 5 heads
    Demonstrate value and line variety
Resemble the actual person you used as a resource
    All on one page

    Sketchbook Assignment #4

    9.18.17

    Due 10.4.17

    Vocabulary:

    Objective- Object centered representation.

Non-Objective- Abstract art is defined as art that has no reference to any figurative reality.

    Process:

Please take one of the inspiring quotes from the box.  Glue it somewhere in your sketchbook and create a work that is inspired by the quote.

    You must complete the following:

    • Create an objective or nonobjective work
    • Can be in color or not.  It depends on the quote!
    • A brief written explanation about how you came to your idea- this can be on the page opposite of the artwork so it doesn’t interfere with work, unless of course, it is part of the work.

    Sketchbook Assignment #5

    10.10.17

    Due 11.8.17

    Vocabulary:

Silhouette- the dark shape and outline of someone or something visible against a lighter background, especially in dim light.

Abstract-  art that does not attempt to represent external reality, but seeks to achieve its effect using shapes, forms, colors, and textures.

    Process:

Choose images of two objects that somehow relate to one another.  Draw the silhouette of both images on the same page so they overlap and that equal attention is given to each.  Use a ruler or compass to increase the fragments that are created through overlapping.

Treat each newly created shape (from overlapping) as it’s own value scale by shading from light to dark.  You can apply your values texturally or smoothly.  You can use pen, pencil, or charcoal.

    You must complete the following:

    • Two images are related
    • Silhouettes are given equal attention and overlap
    • Several additional fragments were created
    • The chosen material is used neatly and clearly demonstrates value variety within each fragment

    Sketchbook Assignment #10

    11.27.17

    Due 12.20.17

    Vocabulary;

Emphasis: An area or object within the artwork that draws attention and becomes a focal point.

    Process:

Tear a page from a book (ask first :))

Read through the words and try to make connections between random words throughout the page

Consider how to use materials to block out some words, while highlighting others to change the meaning of the work

Change the page to create a new quote, poem or theme through emphasis

Be sure the final work of art is well balanced as well

    You must complete the following:

    • Materials used to block out and/or highlight a new poem, quote or theme

    Due 12.20.17

    Process:

Choose a simple subject (an example might be a rose)

Divide a page in your sketchbook into 4 spaces.

Each space will contain an image of your subject, but in each space, you will attempt to emphasize one of the following per space:

    Shape

    Color

    Movement

    Pattern

    You must complete the following:

    • A consistent subject in each of the 4 spaces created on the page
    • One space focuses on shape, one on color, one on movement and one on pattern

    Sketchbook Assignment #12

    1.2.18

    Due 1.17.18

    Vocabulary:

    Skin Tone:

Cool: Hints of bluish, pink, or a ruddy complexion.

Warm: Skin skews yellow, sallow, peachy, or golden.

Neutral: Has no obvious overtones of pink or sallow skin, but rather the skin’s natural color is more evident.

    Process:

Trace your hand and or several other people’s hands so the tracings overlap a few times to create new shapes. Using new knowledge for creating skin tones, paint each of the new shapes a different flesh tone. You may utilize the flesh colors you observe around you. Please be sensitive in the event that a peer may not want to share there flesh tone. This exercise will prepare us for our portrait unit. You may choose to paint, collage, Zentangle, etc. in the background, but you may not leave it empty.

    You must complete the following:

    • Have examples of several flesh tones (at least 10)
    • Have a completed background
    • Overlapped (at least a few times)either your own hand tracing or that of others to create multiple new shapes in the overlapped areas
    • Clean and neat application of paint that demonstrates the ability to create opaque layers
    • A clear understanding of compositional balance is apparent

    You must:

    • Draw large enough to run off all 4 sides of the sketchbook

    • Use the photograph (I suggest you print it) as a resource to create a realistic grayscale image of the subject demonstrating textures, values and an understanding of a balanced composition.

    You must:

    • Must demonstrate a strong light source through intense value transitions, highlights and shadows
    • The object must be drawn large enough to observe details
    • Line qualities successfully demonstrate the ability to observe and draw textures.  The textures appear real in combination with values
