• Sketchbook Assignment #1

    9.7.17

    Due 10.4.17

    Vocabulary:

Organized Pattern-  Precise, regular repetition of designs

Random Pattern- A pattern without an orderly organization

Line Variety- The use of line in combination with tools and other elements of design to produce a particular effect

Texture- An artwork's surface quality such as smooth, rough, and soft

Simulated/Implied Texture- The perceived surface quality in an artwork

    Process:

Using a ruler as a stencil (no measuring required), trace the ruler vertically and horizontally across a page in your sketchbook to create a grid with spaces that are even to the thickness of the ruler.  In every space, draw a texture/pattern that you found in a magazine, or in your environment.

    You must complete the following:

    • A clear effort to mimic the line quality from the chosen observations
    • The textures and patterns fill each grid square
    • There is only one example of a particular texture so that the page is filled with variety
    • No letters are used, and the are no singletons (line without a pattern)
    • The work is done neatly and handed in on time (see above due date)

Sketchbook Assignment #2- pattern and lines

    9.11.17

    Due 10.4.17

    Vocabulary:

Composition- Arrangement of the elements and principles of design within a work to achieve a particular visual goal

Symmetrical Balance- Organization in a composition so the sides of the axis are identical

Asymmetrical Balance- Organization of the parts of a composition so the sides of the axis are visually equal without being identical

    Process:

Using a ruler and other stencils,  create a shape composition that is either balanced asymmetrically, or symmetrically.  Fill in the composition with zentangle patterns.  Finish with a black pen.

    You must complete the following:

    • Pattern variety
    • Balance
    • Line variety- Areas where the line is thicker or thinner
    • Clean lines
    • At least 80% of the composition is full
    • Erased pencil at the conclusion
    • Neat and handed in on time

    Sketchbook Assignment #3
    9.18.17
    Due 10.4.17

    Vocabulary:
Proportion- parts in comparative relation to a whole.
Composition- the action of putting things together; formation or construction.
Outline- a line or set of lines enclosing or indicating the shape of an object in a sketch or diagram.
Contour Lines- a line which defines a form or an edge. It is, essentially, the outline or silhouette of a given object or figure. Additionally, contour lines can be used to show any dramatic changes of plane within the object or form (like the inner seams within the structure of a shoe, for example).
Still-life- a genre of painting or drawing that reflects an arrangement of objects.

    Process:
Choose 3 objects from your room and arrange them into a small still-life. Be sure each object touches another in some way. Create a contour line drawing of all 3 objects as they relate to one another.

    You must complete the following:
    There are 3 objects
    Each object touches another
There is a clear attempt to create accurate proportions by establishing the relationship between parts
The outline and inner contours are described
The lines vary based on the textures within the objects

    Vocabulary:

Value- The range from white to black or light to dark.

    Process:

Using a pencil, create at least 10 even sections on a page in your sketchbook.  Tracing the thickness of a ruler (similar to sketchbook assignment #1) can make this easier.

    You must complete the following:

    • There are 10 EVEN sections
    • Each section is completely filled
    • Each value is different from the others
    • The values get gradually/consecutively darker from white to black

    Sketchbook Assignment #5

    10.10.17

    Due 11.8.17

    Vocabulary:

Abstract- art that does not attempt to represent external reality, but seeks to achieve its effect using shapes, forms, colors, and textures.

    Process:

Find two images from a magazine or printed from a computer that you feel are somehow relate.  Cut and glue to reorganize the images to either change their meaning or utilize an element or principle of design as the new meaning.

    You must complete the following:

    • The original pieces are at least the size of your stretched hand
    • The new image changes the original image
    • All pieces from the original two images are somehow used (no scraps)
    • Gluing is done neatly

    Sketchbook Assignment #6- Linear Landscape

    10.16.17

    Due 11.8.17

    Vocabulary:

Organized Pattern-  Precise, regular repetition of designs

Random Pattern- A pattern without an orderly organization

Line Variety- The use of line in combination with tools and other elements of design to produce a particular effect

    Process:

Find a landscape image from a magazine, or print one out from a computer.  In attempt to create a balanced composition, redraw the landscape in black and white only (NOT GRAYSCALE).  This will challenge you to consider how line quality and patterns can create the illusion of texture and depth.

    You must complete the following:

    • Must be a landscape.  There may be a building or animal present, but it must be mostly the landscape.
    • A variety of lines replace the original image in the drawing
    • The kline qualities seem well planned and are neatly applied
    • The entire image has been drawn in some sort of black ink
    • The final image resembles the original .  The original is provided in the sketchbook

    Sketchbook Assignment #8

    10.30.17

    Due 11.2.17

    Vocabulary:

Tint The mixture of a color with white, which increases lightness

Shade: The mixture of a color with black, which reduces lightness

Tone: Produced either by the mixture of a color with grey, or by both tinting and shading.

    Process:

Create 3 empty value scales on a blank piece of paper.  They should have around 10 empty spaces each, and you can use the thickness of a ruler to create the spaces, rather than measuring.

Using a color and white, create a scale of tints.

Using a color and black, create a shade scale.

Using a color with gray, create a tone scale.

    You must complete the following:

    • A scale each of tints shades and tones that include 10 of each
    • Values are in consecutive order from light to dark
    • There are 9-11 in scale
    • The layer of paint is opaque
    • Only one color per space
    • The entire space is neatly filled reflecting control of the brush and paint

    11.27.17

    Due 12.20.17

    Vocabulary:

Texture: The perceived surface quality of a work of art. It is an element of two-dimensional and three-dimensional designs and is distinguished by its perceived visual and physical properties. Use of texture, along with other elements of design, can convey a variety of messages and emotions.

Still life: A work of art depicting mostly inanimate subject matter, typically commonplace objects which may be either natural (food, flowers, dead animals, plants, rocks, or shells) or man-made (drinking glasses, books, vases, jewelry, coins, pipes, and so on).

    Process:

Organize a still life of 2 to 3 objects that differ in texture. Using any material other than a number two pencil, draw the arrangement as realistically as possible in your sketchbook.

    You must complete the following:

    • There must be at least 2 to 3 objects in the still life arrangement.
    • The techniques must reflect an attempt to draw the textures as realistically as possible.
    • The objects must differ in their texture.
    • The material used to create the work must be anything other than a number two pencil.

    12.11.17

    Due 12.20.17

    Process:

Choose a subject (something simple like a rose) and reduce the subject to demonstrate an emphasis on pattern, geometric shape, texture, or movement

Write a brief reason you believe you accomplished the goal

    You must complete the following:

    • The subject is clear
    • The subject is abstracted through a focus on  pattern, geometric shape, texture, or movement
    • The chosen material helps with the desired emphasis and is used skillfully
    • There is a written summary

Due 2.2.18- Google Classroom Impressionism Research

Instructions are posted in Google Classroom.  The work MUST be submitted through Google Classroom for credit by the due date.

    Sketchbook Assignment #16

1.29.18- Due 2.28.18- Be aware that this needs to be handed in mounted on mat board.  Leave yourself enough time to complete that part of the task.

    Vocabulary:

    Properties of Color:

    Hue- Color

Intensity- Refers to the purity of a hue. Intensity is also known as Chroma or Saturation.

Value- The lightness or darkness of tones or colors. White is the lightest value; black is the darkest.

    Process:

    Choose a small abstract image

Measure the size of the image

Draw an empty shape the exact size of the measured image in your sketchbook (this is where you will paint the exact image)- don’t cut the edges of the original

Copy the composition, colors, values and style of the original by painting in the blank space

Use the paper cutter (after safety has been demonstrated) to trim away the excess so you are left with the identical images (same size)

Use the mounting press to mount your work to mat board after safety of related tools and equipment have been demonstrated

    You must complete the following:

    • Accurately copy the composition of the original
    • Accurately copy the placement, intensity and value of the exact  colors
    • Demonstrate an understanding of the style through brushstrokes and line direction in addition to color and saturation
    • The piece is neatly mounted to a mat board and signed on the bottom right of the at board

    Sketchbook Assignment #17

    2.26.18

    Due 2.28.18

    Vocabulary:

    Scale- Size

    Proportions- Relationship between parts

    Value- Dark and light areas

    Process:

Chose a 3-D object that is smaller than the palm of your hand.

Create a realistic drawing of that object, but scale it up so that when it is drawn on the sketchbook page it runs off of at least three sides of the page.  Although the scale is changing, the proportions and values should be identified to maintain the object’s realism

    You must complete the following:

    • Choose an object that is smaller than the palm of your hand
    • Enlarged drawing of the object runs off of at least 3 sides of the page
    • Accurate value relative to the light source (think of a 10 part value scale)
    • Proportions are accurate in the enlargement process

    Sketchbook Assignment #18

    3.6.18

    Due 4.11.18

    Process:

Create a work of art of your choice using any medium

    You must complete the following:

    • An accompanying written description of how you made composition choices relevant to previous lessons in compositional arrangement
    • An accompanying written description of how you made specific choices regarding the elements and principles of art.  You are not simply naming them, but instead describing how you used them through evidence in the artwork.
