Silent Reading

The single most important thing a student can do to be a successful reader is READ.  To that end, one of the requirements of my class is 10 minutes of daily silent reading.  This is a requirement for EVERY student in EVERY grade level class.  The students will have access to my classroom library, which I am in the process of expanding.  Kids may used an approved reader device such as a Nook or a Kindle.  Students may also read magazines, comic books, graphic novels, informational texts, fiction or non fiction, poetry, plays, short stories, etc;.  At this time, students will not use their phones as a reading devices.  Rest assured, our classroom library continues to grow in diversity.  Donations of books to our classroom are always welcome!

Students are required simply to log the number of pages they read each day, and note when they finish a book or change titles.  Quarterly, students will also write a brief reflection on what they are reading, and I may ask them to discuss it with me one on one.  Students logs pages read to set personal goals, they will not be punished or judged for the number of pages they complete, nor will that information be shared, unless they achieve a milestone (1,000 pages for example). Study after study has shown that the best way to help students become better readers and writers is to have them engage in daily, sustained indepedent reading of high interest texts!
