What is currently happening in our 11?
Currently students are finishing up a unit on Washington Irving's "The Legendof Sleepy Hollow." Students focused on three literary devices: frame story, foreshadowing, and suspsense. They are writing a text-based analysis response. Next week, before Thanksgiving, students will be writing a claims-based essay on the pros and cons of Black Friday shopping!
What do we do in English 11?
-
We read- independently, in groups, and as a class. We read daily.
-
We write- journal entries, essays, short-responses, persuasive arguments. We write daily.
-
We write about what we read- we talk about the content, the author's voice, his use of tools (literary devices), the development of themes, the value of the work.
-
We ask and answer questions- in small groups, in one on one response sessions, and as a whole class, we will ask and answer a variety of questions about text and it's role in our lives.
-
We make connections. As we read a variety of fiction and non-fiction texts, we attempt to make thematic connections between what we read, what we see in the world, and our own personal experiences.
-
We prep and review skills assessed on the Common Core English Regents.
What do I need for the class?
-
A pen or pencil. Daily.
-
A binder or folder for this class or a section in a larger binder, for this class.
-
Loose leaf. Daily.
-
I will provide you with a journal, please keep it in class unless otherwise directed.
How do I earn my grade?
-
I use a points system. You have the opportunity to earn a certain number of points.
-
Your average is the number of points you earned divided by the number of points you could earn.
-
Example: 750 points out of 1000 would give you an average of 75.
So, how do I earn points?
- Silent Reading: 100 points per quarter for the reading log and corresponding activities
-
Journal Entries:20 points each
-
Essays: 50-100 points
-
Projects or Research Assignments: 50-100 points
-
Reader's Response: 10-30 points
-

-
Points can also be earned by participating in class-answering and asking questions daily.
