What is currently going on in ELA 10?

Students are in the midst of their third major unit!  After working on memoir, then grammar, theya re now reading a piece of Holocaust nonfiction by Ruth Minksy Sender.  They are tying the unit up with an essay on how motifs influence theme.  Following that, they will begin a unit on research and claims-based essay writing.

What do we do in English 10?

  • We read- independently, in groups, and as a class. We read daily.

  • We write- journal entries, essays, short-responses, persuasive arguments. We write daily.

  • We write about what we read- we talk about the content, the author's voice, his use of tools (literary devices), the development of themes, the value of the work.

  • We ask and answer questions- in small groups, in one on one response sessions, and as a whole class, we will ask and answer a variety of questions about text and it's role in our lives.

  • We make connections. As we read a variety of fiction and non-fiction texts, we attempt to make thematic connections between what we read, what we see in the world, and our own personal experiences.

What do I need for the class?

  • A pen or pencil. Daily.

  • A binder or folder for this class or a section in a larger binder, for this class.

  • Loose leaf. Daily.

How do I earn my grade?

  • I use a points system. You have the opportunity to earn a certain number of points.

  • Your average is the number of points you earned divided by the number of points you could earn.

  • Example: 750 points out of 1000 would give you an average of 75.

So, how do I earn points?

  • Daily Silent Reading: 100 points per quarter for log and corresponding activities
  • Journal Entries:20 points each

  • Essays: 50-100 points

  • Projects or Research Assignments: 50-100 points

  • Reader's Response: 10-30 points

  • Tests and Quizzes- 10-100 points

  • Points can also be earned by participating in class-answering and asking questions daily.
