Welcome to English as a New Language!

By providing instruction and support to students whose primary language is not English, we help students develop the language skills needed for academic success and full participation in school and society. We work to ensure that all students have equitable access to educational opportunities, regardless of their language background.

Overview of the WCSD ENL Program 

• Language Development Instruction: ENL teachers provide specialized instruction in English language development, focusing on listening, speaking, reading, and writing skills. Instruction is typically aligned with both state standards and English proficiency guidelines.

• Cultural Support: The department often helps bridge cultural differences, assisting students in adjusting to their new academic and social environments. This includes celebrating diversity and providing a culturally responsive curriculum.

• Assessment and Placement: The department is responsible for assessing the English proficiency of incoming students and placing them in appropriate levels of support. This includes regular monitoring of students’ progress and adjusting services as needed.

• Collaboration with General Education Teachers: ENL teachers collaborate closely with mainstream classroom teachers to ensure that English learners are receiving the necessary accommodations and support they need.

• Family and Community Engagement: The ENL department often plays a crucial role in engaging with the families of English learners, providing resources, translation services, and opportunities for involvement in the school community.

• Professional Development: The department may also offer training and support for other teachers in the district to help them better serve English learners.

• Compliance and Reporting: The ENL department ensures that the school district complies with federal and state laws related to English learners, such as providing the required services under the Every Student Succeeds Act (ESSA) and submitting necessary reports on student progress and program effectiveness.
