    TO THE GUARDIANS/STUDENTS:

This is a full-yearRegents course.  It is a comprehensiveoverview of the major areas of Biology:

Science as a Process                              Chemistry of Life(Biochemistry)          Ecology

    Cell structure andfunction                      Genetics

Evolution andClassification                     Plant and Animal Systems

Throughout the year, students will be performing a series of activities and experiments that helpthem to explore the world of living things with practical everydayapplications.

Laboratory work is animportant part of learning any science. It is also a requirement for taking the NYS Regents exam. New York State will not let youtake the Regents exam if you haven’t successfully completed the lab requirementsof 1200 minutes.  Students willmaintain a lab folder with all of their completed labs in the classroom as evidence of this NYS requirement.

The four marking period grades account for 80% of the end of the year final grade. The remaining20% of the final grade will come from the Regents exam. Students will be required to take a midterm that will be given during Regents week in January.Students missing this exam will receive a grade of zero for their midterm.

As we know, 9thgrade can be a difficult transition for some students. They are given more independence and responsibilities, whether they can handle it or not. Asparents, you need to take an active role in their academic progress by checking the homework website daily and preparing them for tests, which enables them to develop skills that they will need to succeed.

Please sign and return the attached sheet to show that you have read this paper.   You may keep this part for your records.
