    Dear Parents and Guardians,

Soon it will be March when we begin finalizing our plans for the 8th grade Moving Up, the National Junior Honor Society Induction ceremony, and the 8th grade Semi-Formal dance. We look forward to hosting these exciting events in-person this school year. More information will be shared with you in the near future.

Our school continues to be active in the New York State Middle School Association, the New York State Middle Level Liaisons, and the National Forum to Accelerate Middle Grades Reform. This year in June, Ms. Furnia, Mrs. Nordstrom, Mrs. Garrand, and I will represent Van Wyck at their Spring event in Washington, DC. Being a member has allowed us to remain current with programs and initiatives that affect the lives of young adolescents.

I am pleased that COVID restrictions appear to be easing up and less time is spent on contact tracing. This will allow faculty, staff and administration to focus its efforts on other important initiatives. Being visible and active in the lives of our students has always been a priority, as is ensuring Van Wyck continues its focus on career and college readiness. We introduced welding several years ago and then single and double-phase home wiring, and now plans are underway to begin basic plumbing. These programs will round out the industrial arts program.

The fall and winter athletic programs were a huge success. Our athletes competed on the athletic fields and gym floors with style and grace. All of our teams had successful seasons despite this being the first year our athletes were able to compete with few restrictions. It was also great seeing our greatest fans rooting for the home team from the stands. We are all optimisitc for what the future will bring.

On a different note, hats and hoods remain a problem. I am asking that hats and hoods not be brought to school. You can refer to the Van Wyck Dress Code for more information. Students are held accountable for violation of the Code of Behavior, as they should be to ensure a safe and orderly school.

The yearbook is progressing nicely and the school will be providing more information in the near future.

Thank you for your continued support.

    Dr. Steven H. Shuchat, Principal
