Dear Parents and Guardians,
School starts for students on Thursday, September 9. We are excited to see our students and staff for in-person learning.
Most of our 7th graders received their Chromebooks at New Student Orientation. Any 7th grader who was unable to sign out a Chromebook at orientation will be able to do so in the near future. I will have more specific information to share with you at a later date.
Our 8th graders will receive their Chromebooks beginning the first full week of school. An effective and efficient process is being developed. I will have more specific information to share with you at a later date.
Seventh and eighth grade parents are required to read and sign the 1:1 Chromebook User Agreement before their children will be issued Chromebooks. Please familiarize yourselves with this document at your earliest convenience. Students will be required to submit a signed copy at time of pick-up.
I attached a sample version of the Van Wyck Chromebook User Guidelines we developed for you to better understand how we might integrate the resource in teaching and learning. More specific details will be shared with students in the near future.
We prepared a special bell schedule for September 9 and 10 to help our students ease back into school. Keep in mind our faculty and staff are specialists in middle level education and understand the needs of young adolescents. Our goal is to help students become well-adjusted to life at the middle level and enjoy their experience here at the school.
During the first full week of school students will meet with administration to review the WCSD Code of Conduct. Important information will be reviewed with students in the areas of school safety, personal hygiene, and behavior expectations.
Transportation schedules were released on Friday, August 27th. Please click here to access the WCSD transportation website. Once the routes are available, you will be able to click on each school to review pick-up and drop-off times.
Please read and review the WCSD Reopening Plan if you have not done so already. It contains important information about masks and social distancing requirements. As a reminder, masks are required at all times when students are in the school and on the bus regardless of vaccination status.
In closing, The JAYBOTS are running a LEGO Robotics workshop for incoming 7th, 8th, & 9th graders at Orchard View High School on Monday & Tuesday of next week, August 30th-31st. Mr. James Amodio, Head Coach of the John Jay FTC Robotics Team, would like to personally invite Van Wyck students to participate. If any of our families have any questions, please reach out to him directly at firstname.lastname@example.org. I attached the Lego Robotics Workshop flyer for your convenience.
On behalf of all of us at Van Wyck, best wishes for a great Labor Day weekend and new school year.
Dr. Steven H. Shuchat, Principal
Van Wyck Junior High School
