    Dear Community,

It is with great pleasure and excitement that I introduce myself as the new Van Wyck Junior High School Principal. My name is Wilson Castro and I am truly honored and humbled to be given this opportunity to serve as your educational leader. Having migrated to this country with my family at the age of 14, I experienced firsthand that through hard work, dedication, and perseverance any goal is attainable. As it usually happens with any major change, there were struggles that came along with starting a new life in a foreign land, but I quickly learned of the immense opportunities that this country offers, especially when it comes to education.

Due to these opportunities, I obtained my first undergraduate degree from SUNY Albany. I later went on to receive my Business Administration Degree with a concentration in Accounting from Baruch College. After working in the  private sector for over 10 years, I made a career change to education, receiving a MS for Teachers Degree from Pace University. I taught science and special education for 12 years, in addition to serving as a curriculum specialist. I later went back to school and earned a Certificate of Advanced Studies for School Building Leader and District Leader from SUNY New Paltz and most recently served as the Assistant Principal of John Jay Senior High School. These positions have allowed me to gain a diverse understanding of the educational landscape and have equipped me with the skills needed to lead our junior high school into a bright future. I feel that my education coupled with my life experiences have provided me with a unique perspective that gives me a deep appreciation for the diverse backgrounds of our vitalizing community.

One of my core beliefs is that every student deserves an educational environment that is engaging and inclusive, which is essential for their overall growth and lifelong success. I am committed to creating an atmosphere where all students can thrive and will continue to promote a positive school climate that nurtures creativity and innovation. By engaging students in problem-solving, critical thinking, and experiential learning opportunities, we will equip them with the skills necessary to thrive in an ever-changing world.

Collaboration and open communication are pillars of my leadership style. I strongly believe in partnering with students, parents, teachers, and the wider community to create a dynamic educational journey. Your input and unique perspectives are valuable, as together, we can provide the best possible education and support to our students.

As your junior high school principal, I pledge to always be accessible and approachable. My door will always be open to your ideas, suggestions, and concerns. I strongly believe in the power of a strong partnership between home and school, as it is integral to a student’s success.

I am thrilled to embark on this incredible journey alongside students, parents, staff, and the broader community. Together, we will create a stimulating and enriching educational experience for our students and prepare them for a bright promising future.

    Warm regards,

    Wilson A. Castro
