                         Classroom News

    Week of May 5th – May 9th:

    Monday: During our morning meeting, we did our subtraction flash card greeting. We segmented sounds to label two picture cards. We had Library Time. We listened to the story of Goldilocks and the Three Bears. We discussed the characteristics of a fairytale. During phonics, we practiced blending sounds to read words. We also labeled the sounds different animals make. We read the poem: “I Speak, I Say, I Talk”. During math, we compared the numbers 6 and 7. We made designs with pattern blocks using 6 and 7 blocks at a time. During positivity time, we discussed “Enthusiasm” after listening to the story, Lola Dutch.  We chose our next purposeful play spots.                                                

    Tuesday: During our morning meeting, we did our subtraction flash card greeting. We unscrambled a sentence to make sense. During phonics, we practiced blending sounds to read words. We practiced recognizing blends and digraphs on our chart. During reader’s workshop, we looked for the digraph, “wh” in our story, Where is Shell? We also made predictions as we read. We read independently and with our partners. We listened to the story, A Mom Like No Other. We chose our new purposeful play spots.

    Wednesday: During our morning meeting, we did our subtraction flash card greeting. We practiced counting by tens and ones. During phonics, we practiced blending sounds to read words. We read a poem together and made all the different animal sounds throughout the poem, “Forest Orchestra”. During writer’s workshop, we worked on writing a sentence for each step in our “How To” books. We had tech time today and did activities on the Starfall app., using the iPads. We chose our next purposeful play spots.

    Thursday:  During our morning meeting, we did our subtraction flash card greeting and fixed the morning message. During phonics, we practiced blending sounds to read words. We practiced rereading some writing samples and revised the spelling of words to make sense. During math, we found partners of 6 and played a ‘snap’ game. During science, we learned about collisions and changes in direction. We experimented with a “marble game”. We collided two different sized balls within a circle shape of yarn to observe what direction the balls went when they collided. We recorded our observations in our science notebooks. During positivity time, we continued to discuss “Enthusiasm” and listened to the story, The Incredible Book Eating Boy.  We chose our next purposeful play spots.

    Friday: During our morning meeting, we did our subtraction flash card greeting. We played “I Spy a Snap Word”. During phonics, we practiced reading words with 4 sounds. We played a “find that word” game. We read the decodable text: “Tub Fun”. We learned two new snap words; “come and love”. During reader’s workshop, we used our snap words to help us learn other words. For example “my” can help us with “by, try, shy, spy, why”. We read independently and with our partners. During math, we found partners for 7. We used dominos to help us find partners for 6 and 7. We continued to discuss ‘enthusiasm’ during positivity time.  We chose our next purposeful play spots.
