Week of March 20th – 24th:
Monday: During our morning meeting, we did our snap word card greeting. We played “Guess my Rule” with some of the snap word cards. During reader’s workshop, we learned that readers need to practice by rereading their books over and over to make their voices sound like story tellers. We learned that we have “reread power”. We reread Kim and Jan and the Ham together. Then we read books with our partner from our partner bins. During phonics, we practice writing dictated sentences on our dry erase boards. We practice using an uppercase letter to begin each sentence and punctuation to end each sentence. We listened to the story, Spring Is Here! We discussed what we love about the spring season. During math, we practiced composing and decomposing the sum of 6 by using drawings, number bonds and addition sentences. We chose our purposeful play spots.
Tuesday: During our morning meeting, we did our snap word card greeting. We unscrambled a sentence on magnetic tiles to make sense. We took a dictation quiz to write 3 complete sentences. During phonics, we practiced using robot talk to make the separate sounds in cvc words. We worked together to use sentences to label the pictures in the book: How To Gather at the Rug. During math, we used unifix cubes to make cube trains. The cube trains were snapped into two parts. Then we used number bonds and number sentences to match the cube trains. During positivity project time, we discussed “Perspective”.
Wednesday: During our morning meeting, we did our snap word card greeting. We practiced completing a number bond with shape pictures and wrote a matching addition sentence. During reader’s workshop, we learned that readers pay attention to punctuation marks to help them read smoothly and in a story teller’s voice. During phonics, we practiced using our robot voice to hear all the sounds in cvc words. Then we wrote the words to check our spelling. We listened to the storybook: When Spring Comes. During math, we continued to use pictures to help us write addition sentences. During science, we listened to the book, Forces are Here, Forces are There, Forces are Everywhere. Then we drew a picture of something in our classroom that we could push or pull and labeled how much force we would use. We chose our new purposeful play spots.
Thursday: During our morning meeting, we did our snap word card greeting. During phonics, we learned that by changing the vowel in a word you can turn them into new words. (ex: bag, big, beg, bug) We took a quiz in phonics on sounding out cvc words to write them. During writer’s workshop, we tried to make our writing as easy to read as possible. During science, we worked with a partner and played the bottle cap game. We took turns pushing a cap on the distance board with either a gentle or strong force. Then we recorded our results. We continued to discuss “perspective” during positivity project time. We chose our purposeful play spots.
Friday: During our morning meeting, we did our snap word card greeting. We unscrambled a sentence to make sense. During reader’s workshop, we learned that readers reread to make their voice smooth and to turn new words into snap words. We practiced rereading with the text, Gus and Dad Mop. We introduced a new snap word, “was”. During writing, we continued to make our writing easy to read and used a word wall to help us write snap words. During math, we took a quiz on writing our numbers from 1-20. We found different ways to get the sum of six by using our red and white kidney bean counters. During science, we learned about the pull of equal forces by trying to stretch a rubber band tied with string over the mouth of a plastic cup. We chose our purposeful play spots.
Reminders: Please clean out your child’s folder each evening and bring it back to school the next day.
