CRITICAL THINKING
The 5 Health Related Components of Physical Fitness are: body composition, cardiovascular endurance, flexibility, muscular endurance and muscular strength
LITERACY
Students need to run, play and move around as much as possible during class, so coming into the gymnasium and sitting down to read is not ideal. During class we do use VOCABULARY words, which build on literacy skills. Students (3rd - 5th grade) need to learn the correct names and be able to identify the following muscle groups: hamstring, groin, gluteus maximus, biceps, triceps, deltoid, quadriceps, trapezius and gastrocnemius (calf).
SCIENCE
Students learn about their body and how it reacts to physical activity. They learn to recognize the signs of an elevated heart rate and the benefits of daily exercise. They also learn how heart disease and stroke can develop over the course of a lifetime. Students will know that the three best choices they can make to prevent the onset of such diseases are to: (1) No smoking (2) Eat a healthy diet (3) Exercise daily
