Please check your child's TAKE HOME folder every night, including the
weekends!!
**Please make sure that all HOMEWORK is complete and returned daily~
It is very important to read with your child every night.
Have them predict what they think will happen and then see if this
prediction does happen.
Discuss with them the elements of a story, such as the setting, characters,
plot and the sequence (order) in which events happened.
USE THINKING MAPS TO HELP ORGANIZE YOUR CHILD'S THOUGHTS!
If you would like, I have a great handout that explains how and when
to use each of the 8 thinking maps.
Other great strategies to use when reading with your child:
-Summarize and paraphrase each chapter as they go through the book.
-Challenge them to look for context clues when they are confronted with a
new word.
-Have them compare/contrast characters, settings and plots.
**Students enjoy seeing the differences and similarities between themselves
and story book characters (making a connection).
**A good way to help expand your child's writing would be to have them write
more detailed spelling sentences. Since this is already something we
practice in school, it won't feel like extra for them!!
**We want them to start becoming more responsible for their work so
please have them proofread any homework for spelling or grammar mistakes.
**They can also help you by writing out shopping lists and even their weekly
chores!
