Hello WCSD Parents & Guardians of Summer School Students,
We would like to make you aware that all Secondary Summer School schedules are now available on Parent Portal. Please check your child's schedule prior to the first day of class (Tuesday, July 6th). The transportation schedule is posted on our transportation website, please be aware that direct door-to-door transportation is not available, and that anyone who needs to take a bus to & from summer school will be doing so from their community elementary school.
Student attendance is extremely important as our schedule is designed to meet the minimum number of attendance hours required per NYS Education Regulations. Please remember that students are expected to attend in person every day. If a student is absent for more than one day, credit will not be awarded, as per NYS Education Regulations.
An Important COVID Update:
The Governor’s most recent Executive Order 210 repealed many of the mandates and executive orders relating to the pandemic. However, it states that the CDC guidance continues for “sensitive settings” which includes K-12 schools. The CDC guidance recommends masks for all individuals in school facilities. Further, as per the June 7th guidance from the NYS Department of Health (NYSDOH), which has not yet been repealed, students and staff are required to wear masks indoors (unless eating and drinking) but are not required to wear a mask outdoors. There has been no new guidance document from the NYSDOH. We have reached out to the NYSDOH as to whether any new guidance will be issued, but (so far) have not received an answer. Dr. Bonk continues to advocate that determinations of mask use be made by local school districts in consultation with local county Departments of Health as conditions and circumstances are different from District to District and county to county throughout New York State.
Therefore, unless your child is unable to tolerate a mask, your child is expected to wear a mask during summer school. There will be multiple masks breaks available, especially as the temperatures rise. If you have any further questions please feel free to contact me directly at Van Wyck Junior High School at (845) 227-7200 or via email.
