Homework Homework for RTI students Students in LLI (Leveled Literacy Intervention) groups are expected to read their take-home books each night. These short texts help reinforce strategies and skills that we have worked on in our sessions. Since the children have read the book prior to bringing it home, it should be easy to read. This practice will help build their sight word vocabulary and fluency. Some groups may have a short activity (worksheet) to complete as well. Every other day, one child in the small group will read aloud to me so I can analyze their reading and look for strengths and areas that we need to continue to work on. This type of data will help drive the group's instructional focus. Students in other intervention groups may also bring home short texts to practice their reading. Many groups will be working on fluency - students will be reading to a partner to calculate the number of words they are reading within a specific time period. They will then chart their progress. Other groups may bring home texts to read so we can discuss or write about in the following sessions. All of this assignments will take a very limited amount of time. Please contact me if you have any concerns or questions.
Reading is thinking!
When your child is reading to you and gets stuck on a word, try not to tell them right away. Instead, you can help them learn ways to figure out unfamiliar words while building their reading skills and strategies along the way.
If your child says a word that does not make sense in the sentence, say …
· You said ______ . Does that make sense?
· Read it again. What would make sense in the sentence?
· Keep reading. Think about what is happening.
· How does the picture help?
If your child says a word that does not sound grammatically correct, say …
· You said _____ . Does that sound right?
· Can we say it that way?
· Reread. What word would sound right?
If your child says a word that does not match the sounds of the letter in the book, say …
· If it was ____ , what would it begin with?
· If it was ____ , what would it end with?
· What does the word begin with?
· What does the word end with?
· Can you make the word you are saying match the sound in the word?
· Does that look right?
