2007 – 2008 Programs and Committees

Executive Committee

Elected positions including President, 1st Vice President (Programs), 2nd Vice President (membership), 3rd Vice President (Teacher Rep), Treasurer, Recording Secretary, Corresponding Secretary, and PTA Council Rep.

Book Fair

Help twice pre year, during fall teach conferences and at spring Open House.  Scholastic provides a nice selection of books at prices that are affordable to all. Our teachers receive five books for their classrooms.  The children participate in a coloring contest. This is a pro-reading event that also provides a source of funding for the PTA.

Box Tops for Dollars

General Mills sponsors a program where schools get 10 cents for each box top, which we collect at the school store.  For each $1.00 in box tops (10 box tops) redeemed at onetime, the children can spend 25 cents at the school store!

One person position.  Send to General Mills a couple times per school year.

Bulletin Board

Communicate with the school community by keeping the bulletin board in the school lobby up to date with upcoming events and import information.

One or two person position, a few times per month.

Care Bears

A group of volunteers that serve in the classrooms, helping the teachers and the students.

One chairperson, volunteers always needed.

Cartridges for Kids

Recycle empty printer cartridges (ink jet, laser, fax, and copier) and used cell phones all school year long at Sheafe, our school receives money and our environment is better for it.  The easiest fund raiser you can participate in!

Copy Program

A service to the teachers to copy necessary classroom materials.

One chairperson, volunteers always needed.

Donate a Book

Celebrate your child’s birthday by buying a book for the library.  A name plate will be placed in the book commemorating this special event.

One chairperson, typically the school librarian.

Election Day Bake Sale

Set up a bake sale when our community comes in to vote.

One chairperson, one time per year.

Several chairpersons, and many volunteers the day of the event.

Field Day

The Sheafe Road Olympics (where everyone is a winner), held once per year near the end of the school year.

Fund Raising

Evaluate fund raising alternatives and choose appropriate annual fund raiser which is needed to supplement our budget so that we can provide all of our programs.

One or two chairperson(s).

Garden Club

We meet 1-2 hours, 2x per week, joined by excited and eager 4th and 5th graders, enhancing the grounds around our school facility.

One chairperson, one or two adult volunteers.

Hospitality

A service for providing refreshments at Grandparent’s Day, DARE graduation, Jump Rope for Heart, Moving Up Celebration, etc.

One chairperson, volunteers needed to serve at the events.

Kid’s Care

An outreach to our community where gently used books are collected and dispensed to needy charitable groups.  Donations have been made so far to: Grace Smith House, Astor Head Start, Youth Mission Outreach, Vassar Hospital Pediatric Unit, and Grinnell Library.

Kindergarten Picnic

A late summer event to acquaint new kindergarten parents and students to new classmates, teachers, PTA and our principal.

Labels for Education

We collect labels from Campbell’s, Franco-American, Marie’s, Pepperidge Farm, Prego , and other products, and when they are all added together, our school can redeem them for various school supplies.

Lifetime Membership

A special honor bestowed on outstanding PTA members for continued contributions to our organization as voted by the PTA body.

Mini Grants

Each teacher is eligible to receive a $40 gift for their classroom to use at their discretion to buy supplies, books, etc.

Newsletter

Our school newspaper!  Published once per month, the Cool School News shares news about what is happening at our Sheafe Road School community.

Reflections

A National PTA sponsored art-oriented program with an emphasis on photography, literature and music.  All children who submit one entry (no limit on number of entries) receive recognition.  Voting occurs at the unit, district, state and national levels.

Room Rep Coordinator

Organize list of room parents.

Scholarship

Each year, Sheafe Road gives a scholarship to a graduating senior at Roy C. Ketcham High School who was also a Sheafe Road graduate.

School Pictures

Organize the fall and spring school picture events.

One chairperson, many volunteers needed on picture days.

Science Fair

Annual 4th grade science fair.

One chairperson, many volunteers needed for the event.

School Store

One time per week event where kids can purchase inexpensive school supplies, such as pens, pencils, folders, erasers, etc.

Sign

Communicate with the school community by keeping the roadside sign current.

One or two person position, once or twice per month.

Staff Appreciation

One week long celebration in the Spring thanking teachers daily with treats and gifts from the PTA.

Sunshine

A service to send condolences to families within our school population.

Talent Show

A spring time family fun event where children can share their entertainment talents (musical, dance, etc.)

Volunteer Coordinator

Match volunteers with tasks they can perform at school.

Yearbook

Take lots of pictures at school events, layout and design the yearbook, work with the publishers, etc.
